What is worth pointing out

Corrections, above everything. A subway line is rerouted, a ferry changes its terminal, a museum rearranges its galleries, an observation deck changes its entrance. If you have just been and something here did not match, that is worth more than any amount of desk research.

Especially useful: anything about arriving and moving around, such as the airport trains, the fare rules on the subway and buses, the Statue of Liberty ferry and its pedestal and crown tickets, and the 9/11 Museum, which are the parts of this guide most likely to go stale.

What this is not for

It is not a booking service. This site sells nothing and books nothing, and cannot get you a room, a table, a ticket or a place on the Statue of Liberty ferry; those are booked with the operators themselves.

It cannot tell you what something costs or when it opens: no price or opening time appears anywhere on this site, because the operator is the only source that is right on the day. For nonemergency city questions, call 311; for emergencies, call 911.

The neighborhoods

If a page describes a place, a street or a piece of the city's history in a way that is wrong or unfair, that matters here too, and it will be corrected. This guide does not label any neighborhood as good or bad, because such labels are rarely accurate and never useful.

Photographs

Every photograph on this site is credited beside it, and every credit links to the file's own page on Wikimedia Commons, where its author, its license and its history are recorded.

Photographs are replaced when a better or more recent one of the same place turns up, and captions are corrected when they describe the frame wrongly.
